The Evolution of Search Engines
The creation of the internet led to a whole new way to connect people all over the world and also created a new way for people to get information on just about anything. Search engines are made to help people in their searches by listing sites by relevance. They are designed to search out information that is entered by the researcher and will show a list of websites relevant to that search. The list is generally listed by the most popular or most used site and goes down from there. Depending on the topic being researched there may end up being millions and millions of sites in the list of results, the results are referred to as ‘hits’.
The number of search engines on the internet is growing and evolving constantly and are being more tailored to specific geographical areas, for example, European search engines or Middle Eastern search engines. With the internet being a world wide tool, it just makes sense to have search engines that focus on different areas of the world. For example if someone is looking for a restaurant in Tuscany, they may Google it in the U.S. and maybe come up with about 3 million hits that will give you general information about Tuscany like travel tips but not so specific to the actual search which was ‘restaurants in Tuscany’. If you use a search engine that focuses primarily on Italy, you will come up with more specific results and more than likely you will get actual lists of restaurants in Tuscany or at least more relevant results. Search engines that are dedicated to specific regions are making internet research much easier.
A Central-Europe search engine would serve the people of that area by giving more accurate, relevant results. The same would be true for an Eastern-Europe search engine. By creating easier ways for people from different parts of the world to gain access to more relevant information, the internet becomes more popular and useful.
The internet has become a huge part of many people’s lives. There are businesses that are completely internet based, for instance, a company based out of Europe, can use a European search engine or other localized search engine to get information from their own area and that makes for more applicable results and is a great benefit to their business operations. Being able to refine your search to your own area can save valuable time if you are in need of local information.
Another advance in search engines that is helping people world wide is a local language search engine. This type of search engine can “learn†the a language and wordage and train itself to search and return results of web pages, web sites, and documents in that specific language. This capability will help people all over the world by reducing the amount of irrelevant results and time spent trying to find the information they need.
Search engines will continue to evolve to help the internet population as the number of users and uses grow.
